October 30- November 3

What an exciting week ahead!

We are looking forward to Halloween on Tuesday, starting the day off with a parade at 8:10. After, we will be working on some exciting and engaging activities in rotations.
Thank you to those who are able to help, and have signed up on our SignUp Genius Volunteer site.

We could also use about 5 medium sized pumpkins for Tuesday's activities. If you are able to send a pumpkin in with your student, that would be great.

Underwood Farms Field Trip- Thursday, November 2

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to chaperone on the trip. We had seven volunteers and four were selected. Please let me know if you were selected and are no longer able to attend. Please be sure your child has a sack lunch and a drink in a disposable container on Thursday. The students have been studying the life cycles of plants these past weeks and we are looking forward to experiencing a farm and some of these plants first hand.

Community Visitors Culminate Our Community Members Unit

The Fabulous Firsts of  Room 5 were very fortunate this week! We welcomed two very special visitors to wrap up our unit of study on Community Members and How Can We Make a Difference In Our Community?.
We welcomed Firefighter Hernandez, Alexis H.'s dad who shared all about fire safety in our homes and school. He also shared all about the hard work and perseverance, a word we like to use a lot in Room 5, that is involved in becoming a firefighter. We learned about what it means to be a part of the Firehouse Community, including chores and responsibilities. We are so thankful to him for sharing his time off with our class! The students were very lucky to hear first hand all about the important work of our firefighter community members.

This past week, we also welcomed Mr. Watnick, Rowan's grandpa, a retired teacher. He touched our hearts with his gift of music and humor. All of the students were singing along, and some even played along with the instruments he brought to share. His passion for students and sharing the gift of learning through music was inspiring.

We are so thankful to both families for sharing their gifts of service.

If there are more families that would like to visit the class and share about your careers, or if you have a special talent you would like to share with our class, we would love to have you!!

This week we will be starting our new Language Arts Unit, Plants and Animals Grow and Change. We will be focusing on non-fiction over these next three weeks.

Thank you all for all of your continued support at home, especially for taking the time to review the homework and support with reading at home!

The Scholars of Room 5 are very lucky to have you!!

Accelerated Reader Update
Congratulations to all of the students that met the September Accelerated Reader Reading points goal. We are aiming for 100% of the class to meet the October AR goal. Daily reading is essential for students to grow as readers. Please take 15 minutes per day and read to your child, or have them read to you.

The minimum required AR points for October is 2 points. The goal for all of the students is to reach 4 points. Each student who reaches the goal of 4 points for October will be recognized at the end of the month.

Please be sure that your students are reading books in their AR reading range. This level ensures that they are successful and can continue to build on the reading skills that they already have.

Once they have read a book, and they are ready to take an R quiz on their book, send it to school in their STAR Folder, and we will help her/him take the quiz within a day or so.

Thank you for all of your support with this great reading tool we are so fortunate to have at Welby Way.

Volunteer Update
All registered LAUSD volunteers, please sign up on our October Room 5 Volunteer SignUp Genius. An email was sent with the link to the SignUp Genius. Thank you in advance.

Spelling List Update
This week week we are adding the high frequency words of the week to our spelling list. The students will be asked to write out these words in the Friday spelling test.

October 2-6

Another week of busy First Grade Fun!!

This past week we welcomed two new students to the Fabulous Firsts of Room 5! Welcome Arjun and Tarun! We are so glad they are a part of our class community!

Hansika Talinki is our first Fabulous First of Room 5. Today she shared her personal newspaper with our class. It was great to learn more about our friend!

We are looking forward to each student sharing during her/his week as the Fabulous First of Room 5. The students will receive the newspaper template the week prior to her/his week, in order to give plenty of time to complete it.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so here is a peek at some of the learning we have been doing these past couple of weeks.

Reminders:

  • If your child has finished reading an AR book, they can bring it to school to take their quiz.  New AR point goals and information will be going home at the end of this week. Please have your scholar read, or read to her/him, for at least 15 minutes a day.
  • The addition flash cards that were in this week's homework folder are for your scholar to keep at home. Please have her/him cut them out, answer the problems and practice them often. In doing so, they will become more fluent with their facts.
  • Thank you for all of your at-home support!!!
